Brot für die Welt / Angola
Brot für die Welt / Angola, 2024
In November 2024 I spent time in Angola documenting the work of Brot für die Welt around girl‘s empowerment and female health in Saurimo.
Saurimo lies near the country‘s biggest diamond mines where few people, often foreigners, make huge profits while the local population works tough jobs and yet suffers poverty. Due to broken societal structures and promises of a better life especially young women are at risk of ending up in unsupportive relationships, leading to early pregnancies and financial dependencies, leaving behind educational goals.
Our protagonist Marlene was about to enter a similar dynamic just like her two older sisters when she heard about Brot für die Welt’s local partner Mwana Pwo and started joining their programs. She has since become an inspiration for other young girls, educating them about their rights and is undergoing a training to become a medical nurse.
